| Information about Croatia’s geographical
position
The Republic of Croatia, whose land surface area amounts
to 56.542 km2, is situated along the eastern coast of the
Adriatic Sea and its hinterland. In addition, it is appertained
by 31.067 km2 of the territorial sea. The length of the Croatian
coast, including islands, is 5.835,3 km. Along the Coast there
are 1.185 islands, cliffs and reefs. Largest Croatian islands
are: Krk, Cres, Brač, Hvar, Pag, Korčula, Dugi otok, Mljet,
Vis, Rab i Lošinj.
Zagreb, the capital of the Republic of Croatia is a commercial,
cultural, university and trade centre of the country.
Population and Religion
According to data of the Census of Population, Households
and Dwellings, 31 March 2001, the Republic of Croatia has
4.437.460 inhabitants. The majority of the population is Croats,
and national minorities include Serbs, Moslems, Slovenes,
Italians, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, and others. The majority
of the population is Roman Catholics. Beside them, other religions
include Orthodox Church members, Muslims, Protestants and
others. The official language is Croatian, and the script
is Latin.
Climate
In the north of Croatia the continental climate prevails,
along the Adriatic coast the mediterranean and the mountain
climate prevails in mountain areas. With average 2 600 sunny
hours during a year, Adriatic coast is one of the sunniest
in Mediterranean, and during the summer sea temperature varies
between 25°C and 25°C
Winter temperatures in Croatia range from -1 to 5°C in the
continental region, -5 to 0°C in the mountain region and 5
to 10°C in the coastal region. Summer temperatures range from
22 to 26°C in the continental region, 15 to 20°C in the mountain
region and 26 to 30°C in the coastal region.
Croatia is rich in natural resources, navigable rivers loaded
with fish, plants and various rare animal species, oak forests
and thermal springs. It is a country of an extraordinary beauty,
Slavonian cornfields, wooded Gorski kotar, and picturesque
hills of Hrvatsko zagorje, which makes it very attractive
to tourists.
